Just been passed another 2 laptops to have a look at:
First ones a Packard Bell EasyNote TK87-051 that the passwords been forgotten on, this thankfully was an easy fix, just a case of putting an ERD Commander cd-rom into its cd-drive and booting the Laptop off that, this brings up a Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset which includes a Locksmith program that allows you to reset/change Admin/User Passwords on the Laptops OS i.e. Windows XP/Vista/7.
It’s just then a case of rebooting the PC without the ERD Disk in the drive and logging in with the new/changed password, so that one’s pretty easily resolved, however it does seem to have an overheating problem, which by the looks of it is a clogged/broken fan, attempted to blow all the crap out of it with a Pressurised Air Duster, which seemed to resolve the issue for a while, but after a few more minutes it shut down again.
Guessing this one needs a complete strip down of the case and a thorough cleaning out, something I don’t do without a sign off and a consent form, as there’s just so much that could go wrong that usually does and I don’t want the to be the one holding the baby so speak, unless I know that people aren’t going to expect me to fork out for a replacement laptop ( not that I would break it, just don’t want to take the risk).
I’ve not had a chance to check the other laptop as yet, but from what I’ve been able to gather its just a case of removing some Malware/Spyware, so should be a pretty easier job, will have a go at this over the bank holiday me thinks.
So what’s the going rate for sorting out virus infections do you reckon ?
