While I was back in Market Weighton I went to visit a friend in Pocklington, a village about 7 miles from Weighton on the way to York, but on the way came across a load of Detour/Diversion signs put up by the Police, seems there’d been an accident on the Shiptonthorpe/hayton Bypass road. I later found out that a man of 55yrs had died at the scene and another had been rushed to hospital, the accident had happened at 6:30pm that evening and when I headed to Pocklington at 1:30am the road was still closed, so that gives you and idea of how bad the accident must have been for the road to have been closed for well over 6hrs.
Not heard much more since I got back to Manchester but no doubt my mum or someone will fill me in onto who it was if they were local.
Seems the roads around Market Weighton are getting busier and busier now its become a sort of commuter village for York and Leeds, just hope they start doing something to make the roads safer.
It’s not whether the accident was horrendous or not etc, but the Police and accident investigation unit etc now have to take pics of various skid marks etc and measure everything, and cannot re-open the road until all the evidence has been noted and pictured etc, unfortunately it all takes time. And again debris will have to be picked up and catalogued, at one time the Police would have arranged for a recovery vehicle after the other emergency services have finished and then swept the road and opened it to traffic, also you used to be able to get by as Police would have sorted a contra-flow or some kind of system to keep the traffic flowing but not nowadays, they just close the road and get on with the job in hand and get the diversion signs out….

I hope you are ok – I bumped into your Mum on Saturday in the cemetery – it was a bit weird but when she came in a few pigeons descended which hadn’t been there seconds before – just made me think of your Dad and thought I would let you know! Your Mum looked remarkably well and is such a lovely lady. My Mum has taken a really bad fall and has smashed her shoulder to bits and broken her arm so she is in quite a bad way at the moment. Just thought I would drop you a line as I don’t think I have seen you since last GBD and it is upon us again! I will be going during the day with the kids but I am on a self imposed ban from the event as I just can’t deal with it anymore and I often end up the main entertainment!!! Might see you if you are home and hope all is ok. By the way – Pocklington is a town – a Market town in fact just like our lovely town! Thought I should point it out and incidentally I still haven’t heard who died yet – there was another fatality just a few weeks before on the same road! Its a bloody nightmare! The Stranglers are coming to Hull in November! Don’t know if you are a fan but I think that is pretty cool! Well as for GBD, I shall indeed be there enjoying the obience that is Market Weighton and the smell of vomit and urine emanating from the pub toilets, so yes we might very well see each other.
